476 AD Invasion by Odoacer Topples Rome
August 28th marks the end of the Roman empire as the Germanic leader Odaecer marched into Rome and deposed Romulus Augustus. Read more in How Did Rome Fall?
This painting is called Destruction and is part of the The Course of Empire series of paintings. It was created in 1836 by American painter Thomas Cole and depicts the fall of an empire.

1996 — Princess Diana and Prince Charles officially split-up.
1968 — Protests broke out at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, capping a year of unrest over the Vietnam War and the future of the country.
1963 — Over 200,000 demonstrators gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans. Here, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his now-famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
1914 — The Battle of Heliogad, an important WW1 clash, took place in the North Sea. An allied victory helped establish British naval dominance.
1793 — French rebels launched an attack on Toulun, a a strategic port city controlled by royalist forces. Known as the Siege of Toulun, this was a key moment in the French Revolution.
