Colonists in Boston protested the Tea Act
1773 The Boston Tea Party Escalates Tensions between Britain and American Colonists
On December 16th, 1773, members of the Sons of Liberty, dressed as Mohawk warriors to conceal their identities, boarded British ships in Boston Harbor under the cover of night. They dumped 342 chests of tea, valued at thousands of pounds, into the water. This act of defiance directly opposed the Tea Act, which granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales and imposed taxes without colonial representation in Parliament. The event outraged British authorities and led to the passage of the Coercive Acts, known in the colonies as the Intolerable Acts, further uniting the colonists in their push for independence.
This lithograph by Nathaniel Currier, titled The Destruction of Tea at Boston Harbor, depicts the 1773 Boston Tea Party.
