336 CE Catholic Church Starts Celebrating Christmas

Estimates of the exact year widely vary, but scholars believe Christians began celebrating December 25th as the birth of Christ sometime between the second and fourth century. How the 25th of December was selected is also a matter of debate, but many believe pagan celebrations on that day were simply co-opted by the Christians. It wasn’t until 336 CE that the Catholic Church officially adopted the day as a sacred feast. In the 1530s, bringing trees inside became part of the tradition. Santa Claus, an American version of the Dutch Sinterklass, who, in turn, was inspired by St. Nicholas, came onto the scene in the early 1800s.

This painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo depicts Baby Jesus cradled by the Virgin Mary and the shepherds of Bethlehem around them.
