2003 Colin Powell Rationalizes the War in Iraq
On this day in 2003, Colin Powell, representing the US as the secretary of state, made a presentation before the United Nations Security Council. Powell announced that the US was already committed to military intervention due to Iraq’s ongoing production of weapons of mass destruction, involvement in terrorist networks, and ties to al-Qaeda. The US invaded Iraq six weeks later, starting a conflict that would last eight years.
