A legendary Mexican drug lord was recaptured

2016 After Multiple Arrests and Escapes, El Chapo Is Recaptured

On January 8th, 2016, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the head of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, was recaptured six months after escaping from a Mexican maximum security prison through a tunnel under the prison’s showers. Prior to that, he’d escaped a previous prison sentence by hiding in a laundry cart. Guzmán’s escapes and reported generosity around his native state of Sinaloa made him a legendary modern-day Robin Hood to those willing to ignore the Sinaloa Cartel’s violence and drug trafficking under his reign.

This is the booking photo of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán after he arrived in the United States following his extradition from Mexico in 2017.
