1990 Emperor Akihito Ascends the Throne
On November 12, 1990, Japan’s Emperor Akihito formally ascended the throne and ushered in the Heisei era. The new emperor’s reign symbolized a shift toward modernization and peace, as Akihito focused on reconciliation efforts and expanded the monarchy's role as a symbol of unity in postwar Japan.
