1849 Fyodor Dostoevsky Is Sentenced to Death
On November 16, 1849, the acclaimed Russian novelist was sentenced to execution for his involvement in anti-government activities. Just moments before the sentence was to be carried out, a last-minute reprieve commuted his punishment to hard labor in Siberia—a harrowing ordeal that deeply influenced his later literary masterpieces, including Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov.
