1942 Los Alamos Chosen for Project Y
On November 25th, 1942, US Army General Leslie Groves and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer selected Los Alamos, New Mexico, as the site for Project Y, the top-secret initiative to develop the first atomic bomb. This decision marked a crucial step in the Manhattan Project, an unprecedented scientific and military endeavor aimed at ending World War II. The isolated location provided security and allowed scientists to work intensively on breakthroughs that would ultimately lead to the first successful test of an atomic weapon, forever altering global power dynamics.
