The first dog flies into space
1957 Russia Launches Sputnik 2
On November 3, 1957, the Soviet Union made history by launching Sputnik 2, which carried the first living creature, a dog named Laika, into space. Laika's journey marked a significant milestone in space exploration and paved the way for future human missions. Although Laika did not survive the mission, her flight provided invaluable data for understanding the challenges of sending living beings beyond Earth's atmosphere.
Sergey Korolev poses with the dog Laika, who would become the first living being to orbit the Earth, in the Sputnik 2 capsule.
