1796 George Washington’s Farewell Address

On this day in 1796, a key figure in American history made a decision that would forever shape the nation's political landscape and set a standard for leadership that endures to this day. George Washington’s farewell address urged Americans to avoid entangling foreign alliances and warned against the divisive nature of political parties.

This is a photo of the painting done by Allyn Cox somewhere between 1973 and 1974. The painting is titled Great Experiment Hall Cox Corridors and depicts President Washington at his desk with Alexander Hamilton, who helped him write his famous address.
