Neptune discovered
1846 Neptune Was Observed
On September 23, 1846, astronomers Johann Galle and Heinrich d’Arrest confirmed the existence of Neptune, following precise calculations by Urbain Le Verrier. This discovery validated the power of mathematical astronomy and expanded our understanding of the solar system.
This is an excerpt from the Hora XXI sky chart of the Berlin Science Academy completed by Carl Bremiker. The work on the chart started in 1826. It was completed in 1844, printed in 1845, and remained untouched until 23 September 1846, when Johann Gottfried Galle and Heinrich Louis d’Arrest used it to discover Neptune, based on the theoretical prediction by Jean Joseph Urbain Le Verrier. The predicted and observed locations were noted in pencil, allegedly by Galle sometime after the discovery; the first one as a square and the latter as a circle.
