Political leaders in France implement extreme actions to crush opposition

1793 The Reign of Terror Began

On September 5, 1793, the French Revolution's most violent phase began as the Committee of Public Safety, aiming to protect the revolution, initiated mass executions of perceived enemies. This period, known as the Reign of Terror, spread fear across France and led to the deaths of tens of thousands.

This painting, titled Les noyades de Nantes en 1793, and painted by Joseph Aubert depicts the "Noyades de Nantes" (Drownings at Nantes) that occurred during the French Revolution in 1793. These drownings were a series of mass executions carried out by revolutionary forces against those considered counter-revolutionaries, particularly in the city of Nantes, and were just one of the many tragic episodes during the Reign of Terror.
