What Happened on September 9th?

The birth of a controversial state

1948 DPRK Proclaimed

On September 9, 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was proclaimed as a separate communist state under the leadership of Kim Il-sung. This followed the division of Korea along the 38th parallel by the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. The establishment of North Korea marked the beginning of a strict authoritarian regime supported by the Soviet Union, leading to decades of tension and conflict with South Korea.
